ANYTHING_CAN_BE{[HACKED]}; - Alexis Torres

The NEST smart thermostat is a smart device that can be controlled via smartphone and has numerous applications, but if hacked, can be used to gather information about other devices that are connected to the network. I took the main focus of hacking and made it the theme of the poster. The background is all text that looks like hacking text, and the font types used for all of the main text are in hacking style. I made green the main color because thatís the color most associate with hacking due to popular media such as The Matrix. I wanted to show what the NEST looks like, so I created my own model and made that the emphasis. The diagram at the bottom is a visual explanation of what can happen with the NEST, and how it is connected to all the devices in the network. The text goes into detail about the dangers of smart devices and how they can be vulnerable to attack.

Optimal Transfer Procedure For The Navy - Casey Brabbs and Catherine Ninah

The goal of this poster was to bring to life the transfer procedure the Navy uses to transfer materials from one place to another. The poster achieved this goal by illustrating the process in a fun, playful manner that is attractive and fun to view. We watch as a present is first retrieved from the hold and rides up the elevator to the transfer point. From there the present is prepared to be shipped by being carefully wrapped up in a bow. Once the present is wrapped it is then ready to be sent on its way to a helicopter or to another ship. The posterís use of a playful blue and orange color scheme as well as organic and curved shapes help to give the poster itís playful nature.

SAFELY SHOOTING FOR THE STARS - Jack Collins and Billy Hughes

The presentation of this poster draws inspiration from classic sci-fi movie posters in order to enhance the drama within the scene and make the research seem like a journey out of the void of danger. The research presented could potentially save lives, so the poster reflects that idea. The environment is brought alive using a dramatic color scheme and vibrant lights. The line of the laser helps to create unity throughout the piece by connecting the top and bottom of the poster. The astronautís stance creates a heroic sense, which merges into the overall theme of the dangers of space travel and protecting the lives of the heroic men and women who depend on basic functions of space shuttles, like the ceramic piece. By showing how we can make steps in the right direction to make space travel safer, I open up the idea of all the possibilities to come with these advances in technology.

SMART MATERIALS FOR UNMANNED AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS - Juan Diaz and Caio Da Silva Lima

My goals when creating a new design is to always push myself to the next level. With this design I believe I did that and more. I went through many alterations from big to small which allowed me to learn from my mistakes to make the final design. With a strong interest in illustrations and use of color and tried to use that to the best of my ability to create something pleasing to me and as well most importantly the viewer. Not knowing much of the research behind the entry, I felt it was important that I be able to portray the message to others who donít know about it and allow them to learn. It is also very important to me that the viewer, not only be inspired by the info, but as well by the design.

STRESS IN COLOR - Maria Olivares and Alex Selimov

For the STEAM program I created a poster for my partnerís research in the science of Piezospectroscopy, which consists of measuring the stress levels in materials. Therefore, I came up with the concept of creating a space shuttle in space that will show you the stress levels. I design the poster to appeal to high school students with strong colors and interesting illustrations that will grab their attention. Also, the topic of space exploration has always been an interesting topic for high school students and most people in general. When designing the poster, I created a dark background to emphasize the space shuttle, and draw your attention to the shuttle and the stress levels on it. My partner provided the text and I put it in the poster to have a scientific explanation next to my design. The poster is well balance by the different components, which draws your attention to the space shuttle in the middle and the text on top of it. As well as, having an appealing title and a demonstration of the stress levels at three specific points to demonstrate the science of Piezospectroscopy.

THE MYSTERY OF THE ORPHAN GENES - Morgan Kourim and Ashley Ramirez

The main purpose of my design was to express why the discovering the knowledge of the function of the orphan genes can be essential to everyone. I choose to have an iconic design of a question mark represent the center visual of my design. The largeness and odd creation of the question mark, being created with the double helix strands of DNA, is meant to draw the viewer into the design. The double helix question mark is made up of millions of 3D round circles signify the molecules that create all matter on Earth. Branching off from the question mark are icons made up of the same 3D circles as the center design. The icons embody the small features such as eye color and essential features such as proper lung function that come from specific DNA segments known as genes. The largest circle, the tree, represents those unknown genes, called orphan genes, which are essential to life but their function unknown. I choose to cater the poster to anyone who had a simple understanding of DNA, genes and how it makes up the individual. This would be knowledge most people would have grasped from a basic biology class. I wanted to use easily recognized images that give off certain connotations to the viewer. For example, the double helix is universal visual that represent DNA and a question can be tied to the mysterious unknown. Breaking down the research to its simplest form, mentally and visually, was a new exploration I havenít seen in previous years of poster design for scientific research. The hope for the execution of this design was to explain the research in a universal visual language that all could understand.

ALGEBRA MAKES GEOMETRY SIMPLE - Rachel Choukroun and Robert Bauer

The poster I have designed in collaboration with my STEM partner Robert Bauer, is to educate students about his study of complex numbers and corresponding non-Euclidian geometries for each of the three distinct systems: Ordinary Complex Numbers, Dual Numbers, and Double Numbers. The design was created using vector graphics in Adobe Illustrator. Vector graphics is a fitting medium for this poster as it makes use of geometric primitives based on mathematical calculations to represent images. Symmetry was incorporated in the entry as much as possible, from the placement of the colored beams radiating from e≤ in the center to the volume of text placed in a radial design balancing the composition. The color scheme is the use of the primary colors: blue, red, and yellow using gradients to add depth and give a 3D look. There is rhythm and repetition within the 3D geometrical representations: the hyperboloid with repeated hyperbolas within, a sphere with repeated circles within, and parabolic plane with repeated parallel lines, as well as the ripples expanding outward below the tri-colored disks in the center. Decorative radial designs and dreamlike environments are a recurring theme in my designs. The radial composition is present in this poster design, with beams of light emitting from e≤ in the center, like a black jewel refracting lights of different colors and revealing its different forms. This entry is not too decorative however since I wanted to give it a sleek and modern look, as if looking into cyberspace or a realm of numbers and shapes.

One Russian Doll After Another - Yelitza Carvajal and John Vastola

This was a collaborative effort to create a poster illustrating the research topic of math, infinity and continued radicals as interesting, simple to understand and visually appealing. The thought of using Russian dolls started with trying to figure out how to portray the idea of an object within an object (in other words; how there can be layers within layers or in this case radicals within radicals) as well as the concept of infinity. Naturally, since within each Russian doll there is another individual and smaller doll again and again, it seemed to fit the research perfectly. I approached the style of the design feeling it should not only attract viewers to look at it but come off as friendly and inviting rather than intimidating. To achieve this effect, I created Russian dolls with curved and slightly chunky forms and placed on a leveled plane. In addition, each doll gazes at and reacts to the viewer (drawing them into the picture plane) with an engaging yet subtly humorous expression. Meanwhile, a bright and cheerful color palette ranging from blues to greens to pinks, purples, reds and yellows also helps to highlight the distinct personality of each doll. In the same way, the varied hues allow the symbol on each doll to stand out.
